Garry Marshall Wiki Biography

Garry Kent Maschiarelli was born on the 13th November 1934 in The Bronx, New York City USA, of German, English, and Italian ancestry. He is an actor, writer, producer, and director, perhaps still best known as a creator and producer of the popular TV series “Happy Days” (1974-1984). His work includes such projects as “Pretty Woman” (1990), “Runaway Bride” (1999), “Valentine’s Day” (2010), “New Year’s Eve” (2011), and “Mother’s Day” (2016). These, and many other films and TV shows have helped him increase his net worth. Marshall’s career started in 1959.

Have you ever wondered how rich Garry Marshall is, as of mid-2016? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Marshall’s net worth is as high as $50 million. Although he has appeared in more than 20 movies and TV series, Marshall earned most of his money by directing, writing and producing.

Garry Kent Marshall is the son of Anthony Wallace Marshall, an industrial film’s director, and Marjorie Irene, a tap dance teacher. His father is of the Italian descent while his mother has German, Scottish and English ancestors. Garry went to De Witt Clinton High School, together with “Spider-Man” creator Steve Ditko. Marshall studied at the Northwestern University and wrote a sports column while he was there.

Marshall’s career started in 1959 as a joke writer for well-known comedians such as Phil Foster and Joey Bishop, and his first writing job was on “The Tonight Show” with Jack Paar (1959-1961). He moved to Hollywood in 1961 and met Jerry Belson, with whomhe teamed-up and wrote for television, working on “The Danny Thomas Show” (1961-1964), “The Joey Bishop Show” (1961-1965), “The Dick Van Dyke Show” (1961-1966), and “The Lucy Show” (1962-1968). Marshall’s first producing job was “Hey, Landlord”, which was aired for one season from 1966 to 1967. This early work undoubtedly increased his net worth.

However, Marshall’s most notable project was “Happy Days”, a television sitcom that was aired from 1974 to 1984 on ABC. Two other successful series were “Laverne & Shirley” (1976-1983), and “Mork & Mindy” (1978-1982). His debut as a film director came in 1982 in “Young Doctors in Love”, stars Sean Young, Michael McKean, and Harry Dean Stanton. Marshall’s next movie was the comedy hit “The Flamingo Kid” (1984), with Matt Dillon, Hector Elizondo, Richard Crenna, and Janet Jones. All these projects added significantly to his net worth.

Marshall was quite busy in the 90’s, starting the decade with the Hollywood hit “Pretty Woman” (1990) with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in leading roles. “Frankie and Johnny” (1991), starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer, “Exit to Eden” (1994), with Dana Delany, Paul Mercurio, Rosie O’Donnell, and Dan Aykroyd soon followed. In 1996 Marshall directed “Dear God”, a comedy movie starring Greg Kinnear and Laurie Metcalf. He again paired Gere and Roberts in “Runaway Bride” (1999) and gave Anne Hathaway a leading role in “The Princess Diaries” (2001). Some of these movies grossed plenty of money, which added to Marshall’s net worth.

He made a sequel to “The Princess Diaries” called “The Royal Engagement” in 2004, and created a dramedy film “Georgia Rule” (2007) starring Jane Fonda, Lindsay Lohan, and Felicity Huffman. “Valentine’s Day” (2010), and “The New Year’s Eve” (2011), are also mentionable films. Marshall’s most recent work is a romantic comedy film called “Mother’s Day” (2016), with Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts, and Jason Sudeikis. Garry is currently working on a TV show “The Odd Couple”, with Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon.

Garry Marshall has been nominated for five Emmy Awards, one BAFTA, and won over ten prestigious awards thanks to his directing skills. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 1997 was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.

When it comes to his personal life, Garry has been married to Barbara since 1963; the couple has three children together.
